Walking

When my grandma died, my grandfather decided his house was too big for just himself. Now in his 80s, he found an apartment in a completely different town - not where he'd lived for decades, not where his son lived.

When I asked him why, he said he'd found a place backing up to a forest. He planned to walk it every day while he still could.

And so he did.

My father loved to walk too. And so do I.

Walking might be the most underrated activity there is. You see interesting places. You smell fresh air. You move. You think. You burn calories without really trying.

The research supports this: brisk walking for just 15 minutes a day is linked to a 20% reduction in all-cause mortality. No prescription required. No side effects. No copay.

My grandfather didn't need a study to tell him this.

Just a forest.

Ps. I miss you, Opa.
