In Between
I love the idea of long runs. Long stretches of time to read. Long conversations with friends. Whole days with my family.
That's mostly not my reality.
Mid-career (late? - don't answer that), full-time job, a kid, trying to stay reasonably fit and not live a totally uninteresting life. Time is a rare commodity, at least long stretches of it.
So I've started paying attention to the in-between stuff.
- Calling a friend while I walk to a meeting.
- Walking to a lot of places actually.
- Biking to the hardware store instead of driving. I always have to go back at least twice anyway. So it's basically interval training.
- Deep conversations with my daughter on the way to drop-off.
- Audiobooks when I am driving to the cabin.
I'll still take the long run when I can. Same with a lazy Sunday and a book. Or bike. Or fly rod.
I just don't want to spend my life waiting for them.
Most of it's happening in between anyway.
